Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is one of the tools we use to identify potential risks in production processes and take action before they turn into defects.
During P-FMEA, we analyze each step of a manufacturing process, systematically. The team identifies potential failure modes, their possible causes and effects, and evaluates the risks. The essential question is always: what could go wrong in our manufacturing process and what can we do to prevent it?
For example, during terminal crimping, a potential failure could be an insufficient crimp. Possible causes might include incorrect machine parameters, inappropriate tooling or tool wear. The consequences could range from increased electrical resistance to an intermittent connection or loss of product function.
The purpose of the analysis is not simply to identify these possibilities. It is to determine how the risk can be reduced.
An important principle of FMEA is to focus on prevention rather than final inspection.
Depending on the identified risk, actions can include:
verifying tooling and equipment condition
controlling machine and process parameters
improving work instructions
implementing appropriate inspection and testing methods
The results of the analysis provide an important input for process control plans, to ensure that identified risks are managed directly in everyday manufacturing.
FMEA is a team effort
Potential process failures are rarely visible from only one perspective. That is why FMEA is performed using a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together knowledge from areas such as quality, production, process engineering and maintenance. Different perspectives help the team identify technical risks, understand their causes and consequences, and define effective preventive and detection measures.
FMEA is not a document that is created once and then forgotten. Manufacturing processes change continuously — new products are introduced, equipment is modified, technologies are improved and lessons are learned from production and customer feedback. For this reason, FMEA analyses are regularly reviewed and updated.
This approach helps Cablex build more robust manufacturing processes, reduce defects and scrap, and ultimately improve product quality and customer confidence.
